ABOUT SAM

Sam Taskinen is a Finnish bass-baritone with a ”glorious voice, which resonates with a warm brass-like ringing and an unforced dramatic flair” (Auli Särkiö-Pitkänen, Finnish Music Quarterly). She is currently on her first season freelance career. This season Sam can be seen on stage as Marius Wegener in the world premiere of Tobias Picker’s Lili Elbe (Theater St Gallen), Fasolt in Das Rheingold (Theater Erfurt) and The World’s Wife with Ragazze Quartet in Utrecht. Her previous roles have included Kaspar (Freischütz), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Wotan (Ring in Concert), Angelotti (Tosca) and Kuno (Freischütz) among others. Future engagements include roles such as Fasolt (Das Rheingold), Filippo (Don Carlo), and a number of world premieres.

Sam was a studio member with Komische Oper Berlin (performing roles such as Masetto and Colline). She has performed oratorios with Händelfestspielorchester Halle and in Hamburg, as well as having debuted in opera roles at Lincoln Center and Edinburgh Festival before joining the ensemble of Theater St Gallen for the seasons 2019-2021, where she got to sing several roles such as Armelinde in Viardot’s Cendrillon, Achilla in Händel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto and Capitàn in Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas.

Sam was trained in opera at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, and also made her soloist debut at Finnish National Opera while also performing as a soloist with multiple Finnish orchestras.
